ABSTRACT

This chapter will focus on the use of sand to develop children’s early mathematical ideas in a range of exciting ways. Sand is a versatile resource which offers numerous opportunities for learning about pouring, filling, hiding and finding objects, talking about full and empty, sand timers and the properties of wet and dry sand. It can be used on a large and small scale offering kinaesthetic opportunities as children walk through the sand, feel it between their toes and make footprints. Their experience of sand in the wider world such as at the beach or at home in sand pits provides further opportunities to explore concepts developed within the setting.
