ABSTRACT

This chapter will focus on the use of construction to develop children’s early mathematical ideas in a range of exciting ways. This is often a busy area in Early years settings which naturally encourages children to explore 3D shape, position, direction, colour, size, height and counting as they build and construct. Children can work on large or small scales with a whole range of resources including commercially bought bricks or even empty cardboard boxes, both inside and outside. This area of provision is particularly popular with boys and therefore a wonderful opportunity to encourage reluctant writers to record mathematical ideas and the use of rich mathematical vocabulary.
