ABSTRACT

This type of play is a favourite with children as they have opportunities to explore different and imaginative worlds and characters. Resources such as the train set, cars and garage, animals, doll’s house and toy castle offer a wealth of mathematical concepts such as counting, sorting, adding and subtracting, matching, measuring and problem solving. This type of play along with construction is often a favourite with boys and the perfect way in to support, assess and extend their learning in real contexts. Children feel confident when working in an imaginative world and will therefore work with greater confidence when using and applying mathematics in this area of provision.
