ABSTRACT

This chapter will focus on the use of food and cookery to develop children’s early mathematical ideas in a range of exciting ways. Children are fascinated with cooking and especially enjoy eating their wares! The process of cooking, especially when following a recipe, is full of mathematical learning: weighing, timing, capacity and the language of time. Even when the food is made, the learning goes on as children explore sharing, cutting in half, and problem solving. Is there enough for everyone or do we need to make more? This is a key stimulus in Early Years settings as it demonstrates to the children how learning is linked together and the real-life application of their learnt skills.
