ABSTRACT

A number of recurrent themes are brought together in this final chapter to try and highlight some of opportunities and challenges associated with design management in a collaborative environment. Some of the case study contributors have already provided their views on the future role of the construction design manager. They have, independently, emphasised the role of technologies (especially BIM) as an agent of change and also highlighted the need for better understanding of the role within the construction sector. Our approach in this chapter is to a take a reflective stance and set out some of the more important issues facing design management within the AEC sector. In doing this, the one word that constantly surfaces is ‘understanding’. Throughout the book we have been dealing with understanding, specifically understanding the role of the design manager and by implication, a better understanding of the complexities of design.
