ABSTRACT

In many respects, the expansion of the construction design manager role reflects the constructors' growing awareness of the value of design, changing procurement routes, evolving information communication technologies, increased responsibility for design quality. And also recognition of the benefit of managing the design at all stages of construction; which is true of the new build sector and the refurbishment sector. Job vacancies for design managers are being advertised as ‘pre-construction design managers’ or ‘construction design managers’ to fulfil different, yet complimentary, roles. In this chapter the emphasis is on the tasks and responsibilities of construction design managers at the key stages of projects, be it pre-construction, construction or post-construction; illustrated within this chapter by three case studies from practitioners.
