ABSTRACT
ThiS Incident on Long Is land resulted In the deaths of 31 commuters . Rockville Center was und e rgoing major engineering work at the time of the collision. Railroad workers were separating the levels of the up and down tracks , but the only way to accommodate eltlsting traffic during the construction period was to run trains on a single section of track for a short distance. Automatic sign a ls were placed at each end of the singl e-track section and decis ions on train prio rity were the responsibility of Rockville Center station.
