ABSTRACT
The history of women's work does not conform to a simple evolutionary model. The pattern evident by 1900 continued with some variation during the 1920's and 1930's, but after World War II the work-force participation of women in Britain and France differed significantly from what it had been at the beginning of the century. The differences represented not a continuation of, but a departure from, the earlier patterns.
