ABSTRACT

Thus, both work and education can become tools for socio-political advancement, just as they are often tools of oppression. By the same token, resistance within these areas may profoundly challenge the power structures of a society, or-sometimes even simultaneously-may drive them to entrench themselves more deeply. Resistance in these areas may be enacted from a position of almost no privilege, or it may be enabled by the privileges a woman already has· within power structures-privileges that she both relies on and challenges. For all these reasons, we pay particular attention to the way privilege and resistance are imbricated.
