In this interview, von Trotta sheds new light on important motifs in her work, such as the Doppelgänger, the effects of prison on her characters, and her representations of women's friendships. In the second part of the discussion, von Trotta talks about the mixed reactions to The Promise, the first major film to deal with the psychological traumas of reunification after the dismantling of the Berlin Wall.
