ABSTRACT

Poland In Poland, Agnieszka Holland belonged to the group of filmmakers that defined what constitutes "classic" communist-era Polish film, Andrzej Wajda's Unit X. Unit X produced Wajda's war trilogy and his Man of Marble and Man of Iron series, but it also provided the training ground for other outstanding non-classic Polish directors, such as Polanski and Kieslowski. Man of Marble and Man of Iron in particular helped define late Soviet period Polish filmmaking, which is summarized as follows by David Paul: "In Communist countries it is taken as a given that the arts, including cinema, have political significance."2
