ABSTRACT
What characterises the White multiculturalism and the White ecology examined in earlier chapters is that they exemplify a fantasy's adaptive capacity. They represent the way a socially and historically grounded fantasy of White dominance, which emerged from the history of the White colonisation of Australia, was adapted by its subjects to the changing social and demographic constitution of Australia. A fantasy's capacity for adaptation means its ability to sustain itself despite the change in the practical social reality in which it is grounded. In so doing, it offers the subject who inhabits it a relatively stable and viable sense of themselves — in this case, a credible and continuing sense of White dominance.
