INTRODUCTION Cyril Orvin Houle was an adult educator who was never concerned with keeping pace with his colleagues. Instead, he has marched to a different drummer aH his professionallife. The purpose of this chapter is to review his career, identify sorne of the influence he has exerted on adult education through his writings, his students and colleagues, and his associated activities. Finally, several of his seminal ideas that have not yet been fully exploited wiH be discussed, leading to a summary assessment of the contributions of his scholarship to the field of adult education.
