ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION Malcolm Knowles is, for many people, the creator of the concept of andragogy and it is true that much ofhis work, both in theory and practice, was focused on the concepto But Knowles was around the adult education scene long before the term became fashionable, although the term itself was coined long before Knowles actually learnt it. This chapter will, naturally, focus upon the idea of andragogy as Knowles has conceived it, but it also seeks to examine the development ofhis thought and will, therefore, include sorne reference to his career, but only in relation to the way that it influenced his thinking.
