Although some women traveled abroad in the eighteenth cen-tury, notably Lady Mary Wortley Montagu, it is not really until the nineteenth century that women begin to travel alone to distant places far from the confines of home. Gertrude Bell, a traveler herself, speaks passionately for this group of women travelers.
