ABSTRACT

Founded as Granville in 1870 on a small peninsula surrounded by False Creek, English Bay and the Burrard Inlet and dominated by picturesque mountains, Vancouver is considered one of the most livable cities in North America. Much of its success is a distinctive culture that promotes social consciousness and a long-term economic view that has brought about, among other things, well-maintained public amenities such as parks, beaches, markets and waterfront promenades within blocks of downtown.
