ABSTRACT

Bergen is centered on the Vågen, a small, yet deep harbor that was once along a major sea-based trading route between Norway and Europe and access to North Sea fisheries. Today, the harbor is more for small fishing and recreational craft and its quay more for recreation and tourism. Combined with its topography and a wood building tradition, the town’s form is a series of narrow streets following the contour with a series of wider common corridors cut through the city to prevent the spread of fire.
