ABSTRACT
Bruges is an example of a medieval town that evolved around a pair of grouped squares each with its own role in the city in which the power dynamic among the church, state and mercantile systems influenced its form. This expression is especially clear in Bruges, Arras or Venice and gave rise to systems of sacred, governmental mercantile spaces.
