ABSTRACT
Midan al-Tahrir, or Liberation Square, is an intersection near Cairo’s burgeoning commercial and residential district along the Nile. Fashioned on Parisian boulevards and streets, the Midan is not so much a square as a vast, billboard-girdled fissure in Cairo surrounded by financial, cultural and administrative institutions and, therefore, often the center of political and social turmoil.
