ABSTRACT
In 1561, Spanish Habsburg Philip Il declared Madrid, which was then a diminutive town, as Spain’s new capital. Not long after, he sponsored construction of a new plaza that would not only accommodate courtly events but also symbolize the new imperial city. The result was the princely and uniform Plaza Mayor that reflected Philip’s ambitions and the society’s collective spirit.
