ABSTRACT
Place d’Armes is one of several colonial era squares in downtown Montréal. A relatively small square in the middle of the city’s oldest district, it was the center of Montréal’s original French settlement, Ville-Marie, that was founded in 1642. Like any city, Montréal underwent significant social and political changes, especially in the eighteenth and twentieth centuries, echoed in the square’s morphology.
