ABSTRACT

Ordered yet dynamic, the spatial composition of Place Stanislas, Place de la Carrière and Place Général de Gaulle in Nancy is considered one of the more exquisite urban spaces in Europe. This high regard is due in part to the composition’s intrinsic dualities: its scale is imperial, yet discreet and the spatial sequence is clear, yet provides a variegated flow. As such, it represents a high point in theatrical French Baroque urban design.
