ABSTRACT

In addition to its plan and massing, Michelangelo called for nearly identical façades to unify the buildings and thus the entire piazza. The façade of the new complementary palazzo, aptly named the Palazzo Nuovo, and the refaced Palazzo dei Conservatori have two, distinctly scaled orders. The first is the colossal Corinthian pilasters that are scaled to the piazza and tie together the buildings’ two stories. Interposed within the colossal order is the smaller Ionic order on each side of the loggia openings and second story windows.
