ABSTRACT

The Slottsbacken (Palace Slope) and Stortorget (Big Square) are a series of spaces in the center of Stockholm that link the harbor to the city’s Old Town. The arrangement of Stockholm’s royal palace and other buildings were not designed in isolation, but developed by accretion to integrate into an overall urban scheme. As such, as buildings appeared and as the city grew, the city matured into a unified whole. Buildings become less of objects and more of participants by often deferring to the greater role of making space in the city.
