ABSTRACT

Located in Tokyo’s Asakusa district, Nakamise is a popular destination for tourists and Tokyo residents alike. The narrow, open-air pedestrian street is a series of attenuated, single-story kiosks offering a wide variety of items for sale such as inexpensive souvenirs, trinkets and clothing. To the urban designer and architect, it represents a distinctly Japanese concept of public open space centered on a temple precinct and the public street.
