ABSTRACT

The task of developing literacy skills can be a very challenging and exciting one, especially if teachers become fully aware of the numerous resources available to them. Children need to be exposed to and interact with a variety of genre, text types, and purposes in the process of reading and writing. This goal of teaching students to obtain meaning from the printed text cannot be accomplished with a basal reader or a reading text alone, but rather with every means of communication available that will require them to interact with different audiences for a variety of reasons. This chapter discusses the resources available (ranging from the classroom library to the computer) for the teaching of reading in Spanish. The use of all these resources creates a classroom atmosphere that celebrates literacy and encourages the emer-gence of a community of readers.
