ABSTRACT
The young master was not a white man. His father, the old master, was a white man. As a young man, the
old master had watched as his heart got away from him; and, unchained, he fell for the fair Harriet, who had been purchased on the block to serve the master's house and heirs forever. And so, it was Harriet who made James Brown's house, and produced his heirs. In those days when the curse of womanhood was giving birth, Harriet bore him four children; four new lives of which he was a part, and by whom he was enriched.
