eye, to those in the child who has only been shaken and has had no impact even to the head. Those child abuse patients whose first medical encounter was with an ophthalmologist were almost always those who had signs of direct traumatic impact such as retinal detachments, cataracts, or glaucoma (Friendly 1971; Jensen, Smith, & Olson, 1971; Kiffney & Hill, 1964; Tseng & Keys, 1976; Weindenthal & Levin, 1976). The injuries from direct impact that have been reported have been the very late sequela of the trauma and the acute signs had resolved.
