ABSTRACT

This chapter is one of the cornerstones of the whole book, and we are aware that it is the main reason why many readers may have purchased or borrowed it. One of the really difficult questions, even amongst aficionados of PSHCE, is to describe what it is exactly, and how to plan and organise its teaching. Fortunately, over the past few years two things have happened which help us considerably in this task. The first is that the government, in the form of the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority, has clarified what it means by PSHCE (although they call it ‘PSHE and Citizenship’). Second we have witnessed the gradual introduction of learning outcomes into PSHCE – which has enormously enhanced our understanding of what it is we feel should be taught, and even how it should be taught. This is turn has considerably eased the knotty questions of assessment and evaluation.
