ABSTRACT
A ‘safe site’ for germination – a place where a seed can settle, preferably in well drained, well aerated soil, with space to grow, and with little likelihood of being blown or washed away. Much of the autumn ‘seed rain’ dies without ever reaching a safe site. Either there is no space available, or the seeds are washed or blown away, or collected and eaten by predators.
