ABSTRACT

Is the staffroom a place of peaceful sanctuary or of frightening fiends waiting to devour the fresh NQT? Whatever the presumptions about teachers being nurturers, educators and balanced all-rounders, staffrooms across the country may appear to contradict this! Before you mutter, 'There but for the grace of God... ', it is important to consider how you can ensure solid working relationships with all your colleagues. You may have to bite your tongue a few times as yet another old-timer mutters, 'Career Entry Profile - didn't have anything so flash in my day' or 'Why on earth did you choose a career in teaching?' Don't forget that the time spent in staffrooms can be all too short an opportunity to divest yourself of the frustrations of the day. These have to be stored until you have an adult audience and this is the same for all teachers, regardless of their age or experience.
