ABSTRACT
The history and development of town planning in Italy are both complex and controversial, involving not only the Greeks but also the Etruscans and the Romans. The ambiguities in part arise from the fact that in many cities, especially in central Italy, Greeks, Etruscans and Romans came into direct and close contact. The Etruscans were the first true city-builders of central and northern Italy. Etruscan expansion northwards into the Po Valley and southwards into Campania brought the Etruscans into contact with the Greeks. Etruscan expansion northwards into the Po Valley and southwards into Campania brought the Etruscans into contact with the Greeks. In Campania in particular, the Etruscans came into direct contact and eventual conflict with the southern Italian Greek cities. Evidence of the Etruscan colonisation in northern Italy continues to increase. Etruscan planning methods without a doubt were Greek-inspired.
