ABSTRACT
Ritual languages, special registers and speech decorum reflect the social and cultural features of the societies in which they occur. They thus constitute linguistic usages that are significantly shaped by extra-linguistic factors. Yet the patterning of these usages in Austronesian languages shows remarkable similarities across a wide range of diverse societies. Such similarities point to the operation of some of the basic features of language within a common cultural heritage.
