ABSTRACT

Sama languages, also known as ‘Bajau’ or ‘Sama-Bajau’ in the linguistic literature, are spoken mainly in the Sulu Archipelago (southern Philippines), Sabah (eastern part of Malaysian Borneo), and eastern Indonesia (see Map 13.1). The original homeland of the Sama is thought to be in the Zamboanga-Basilan area in the southern part of the Philippines (Pallesen 1985).
