ABSTRACT

Belait is a little-described language spoken in Brunei Darussalam in a small number of villages in the Belait and Tutong districts, in the western and central areas of the country respectively. The Belait were formerly longhouse dwellers: the last longhouses are said to have been abandoned in the 1950s. Until recently the culture revolved around the cultivation of sago palm and rice. Speaker numbers were estimated at 700 by Martin (1995). Belait is now only very rarely learnt as a first language.
