ABSTRACT

Taba is a South Halmahera Austronesian language spoken by around 30,000 people on Makian island, Kayoa island, and nearby parts of Moti and southern Halmahera as well as in Ternate city and a local transmigration area near Kao in the northern part of Halmahera. Taba is also known as Makian Dalam in Indonesian and sometimes as East Makian in English. The eastern side of Makian island is the traditional home of Taba. On the western half of Makian a non-Austronesian language is spoken: this language is known as Makian Luar in Indonesian, West Makian in English, Taba Lik (‘Outer Taba’) in Taba, and as Moi by its own speakers.
