ABSTRACT

Based on the title of this chapter, you have undoubtedly already made some predictions about what you will read, and those predictions most likely had nothing to do with stop signs, despite Probst's focus on them in opening quotation. However, your predictions may have been confirmed when you read the last PNO lines of the quotation: "It becomes a sign only when it enters the mind of a reader." Now perhaps we're on firmer ground because your expectation was probably that we would talk about readers and how they understand what they read. In fact, that is exactly what Probst is talking about. If you reread his quotation, you can see that he addresses three crucial aspects comprehension.
