ABSTRACT

It was May 2003, and Randi and I (Maria) were discussing the uncertainty of the next school year. Under the Children First Initiative, the community school districts in New York City had been consolidated into ten super regions. District personnel were being redeployed, and my position as a district science staff developer was no longer going to exist. I had decided to take a teaching position, but was encountering principals who questioned my desire to teach after being out of the classroom.
