ABSTRACT

Education is a major focus of corporate and foundation giving in the United States. In 2003, for example, funding for education represented 26.4 percent of all foundation grants of $10,000 or more, the largest share of overall foundation support. Some foundations support education because it is (or was) a special interest of their founders. For others it is a component of an interest in supporting programs for youth or lowincome populations. For corporate givers, support for education may provide an opportunity to support future workers or consumers of their product or to present a positive image in a geographic area where they do business.
