ABSTRACT

Introduction THIS CHliPIER AIMS to introduce the key terms associated with this area of inclusion. Although an understanding of these terms is not absolutely essential to engage with the idea of race equality, the terms provide a useful supporting framework within which to develop an understanding of race equality. It should be noted that the subject of race equality and racism is challenging because it makes us examine our preconceptions and prejudices. It challenges the assumptions on which we make our judgements about groups of people. If we are to move ourselves, school policies and practices towards a truly inclusive approach then the reader needs to remain open to the ideas within this chapter and reflect on the tasks set. The chapter will also provide an overview of the historical developments related to race and education. It is essential to appreciate the origins of this debate in order to understand the contemporary societal climate, which inevitably impacts on school life regardless of the school's location.
