ABSTRACT

I have emphasized the importance of taking a client-centered approach to integrating spirituality into assessment and intervention. In the assessment section I described client-centered approaches in which we invite clients to teach us about their beliefs and practices and how these help them to cope. In this chapter, too, I use a clientcentered approach to discuss ethical issues in integrating spirituality into clinical work. I first summarize American Psychological Association ethical guidelines that are relevant to the issues, concluding that a client-centered approach harmonizes with these. I then discuss three difficult ethical issues that arise in clinical practice, with clinical examples.
