Owen Lattimore's life spans the twentieth century and his career interweaves with two of its more significant events: the revolutionary upheaval that transformed China from 1911 to 1949 and the savage aftershock known as McCarthyism in the United States. An assessment of that biography, long overdue, has much to tell us about the politics of doing geography in a world in political turmoil.
