ABSTRACT

When you are preparing the text of your song, you are considering both the words and the music. Decisions you ultimately make about your performance will be a balance between these two. The work in this chapter examines what is involved in making these choices and uses work from previous chapters to put them into action. Suggested exercises on text and subtext assume that you have had some dramatic training and allow for you to do character research as you would for a play. In addition, there are considerations such as musical style, the physicality of the character and the dramatic 'play' of the song. Suggested further reading covering these topics in depth are Successful Singing Auditions1 and On Singing on Stage.2
