ABSTRACT

Second, income transfers from parents, commonly known as "allowances," have reached surprisingly high levels for certain youths. Analyzing data on 9,000 children from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth, Zagorsky and Hering (2000) found that youths between the ages of twelve and eighteen reported an average of more than $100 in weekly allowances and other income transfers from their parents. Extrapolated out, Zagorsky's data indicate that the ten million U.S. teenagers receive approximately $1.05 billion per week in transfers.
