Assessing children 's progress in science book
Looking at children's work All schools should have a copy of an A4 booklet called Science; Exemplification of Standards, published by SCAA (The School Curriculum and Assessment Authority) in 1995. This book lays out examples of children's work and matches them to the levels expected for each of the science Attainment Targets in the 1995 version of the National Curriculum. It's a good read because the children's work is so delightful ; but it is also a great help in moderation - the process by which teachers agree that a particular piece of work belongs at a particular level. At the time of writing (2001) there has been no revised version to match Curriculum 2000, but the OCA website has some examples of pupils' work on www.ncaction.org.uk.
