ABSTRACT

The Spiritual Baptists occupy an ambiguous position in Trinidad and Tobago. On the one hand, stories abound regarding their rituals and beliefs and their supposed links with obeah, or, witchcraft and black magic, and Orisha Work/Shango (see Chapters 5-8 below); and on the other hand, their supposed influence in all aspects of life in Trinidad via the faith's extensive, but officially unacknowledged, membership. The "converted," as the Spiritual Baptists call themselves, are to be found throughout Trinidad. They also figure prominently in the history of the island.
