Preparing Poems for Performance book
There are a number of stages to work through when preparing for a poetry performance. This chapter goes through each stage in detail and provides teachers with advice on nurturing poetry performance skills in children. Performance poems are ones that work well out loud and off the page. The majority of the poems in this book are suitable for performance. And those poems that feature in this chapter each have related performance notes and suggestions. To be able to give an expressive performance, children will need to learn their poems off by heart. Once children have learnt them, they can then give time to other aspects of performance, such as actions and movement – and how they will give emphasis to certain lines, phrases or words. The two most problematic areas in performance tend to be volume and pace.
