ABSTRACT

Typically, a D&T Scheme of Work is made up of a range of di!erent projects or units of work to cover the Programme of Study. The D&T projects that teachers use vary from school to school, according to interests and sta! expertise. Each project should have a clear focus on teaching particular objectives. As a key stage set, they should cover the National Curriculum requirements in su"cient breadth and in a balanced and progressive way. An appropriate topic should be selected for the project or unit of work to teach knowledge and skills. These projects can be taken from their own ideas, and the DfES/ QCA Schemes of Work Units. Some of these are more appropriate for pupils with special needs than others because they are easier to adapt and di!erentiate the tasks and the outcome. (Example long-term planning sheets are provided in Appendix 5.1 on the CD which accompanies this book.)

The examples of design and make assignments (DMAs) in this chapter have been taught by a number of schools and they have suggestions about how to adapt them for pupils with SEN. The range of projects were chosen against a number of considerations:

● They are popular amongst pupils with SEN: we asked pupils which projects they had found motivating and interesting.
