ABSTRACT
Central business districts (CBDs) were designed, first and foremost, as transportation hubs. Whether it's the evolution of Boston or Boise, the development of downtown was predicated on the strategic location of transportation. From harbors, to roads, to rail, and then highways, downtowns grew around the intersection of commercial transportation routes. Trade and transportation are inextricably linked.
