Downtowns regain or maintain their vibrancy by imbuing their districts with social activity. Parades, festivals, and sporting events create instant venues for sociability, but it is shopping, theater, dining, sightseeing, strolling, or lingering in a downtown square that provide the social fabric of the successful central business district.
